AUA
This University comprises 7 Faculties and 35 Laboratories and it has been making valuable contributions to Greek agricultural and economic development, by conducting basic and applied research in the agricultural sciences. AUA is involved in many European and National projects. The Laboratory of Agricultural Zoology and Entomology is the oldest one (since 1920) and it is involved in studying injurious and beneficial insects, mites and nematodes in relation to agriculture (identification, biology, ecology, management, genetics etc).
The Laboratory of Agricultural Zoology and Entomology of Agricultural University of Athens (AUA) is specialized in Honeybee diversity and Honeybee genetics.

The core team, involving in SMARTBEES, consists of:

Prof. Nikolaos Emmanouil: He is the Director of the Laboratory, and member of various State Scientific Agricultural Committees. He received his PhD in Agricultural Zoology and Entomology at University College Dublin. He first recorded the presence of the Varroa mite in Greece and was the first to describe the immature stage of this mite

Dr. Maria Bouga: She received her PhD in Biology, specialized in Genetics on honeybees, from the University of Patras in Greece. She is the expert in Greece on that field. She is collaborating with the Laboratory of Agricultural Zoology and Entomology where is responsible for the Molecular Unit. She is member of the Executive Committee of the COLOSS network and she coordinates the Apimondia WG7 “Queen rearing and impact on the genetic variability (and health) of productive bee colonies”.

Miss Laetitia Papoutsis, Msc., PhD student, is appointed in the frame of SMARTBEES.

The team of AUA is involving in the Biodiversity and Extension activities. Find a leaflet on SMARTBEES in Greek here.

More specifically, AUA is responsible for the south-eastern Europe collection of samples of A. mellifera. Regarding the sampling in Greece, we are going to collaborate with the Federation of Greek Beekeepers Association and with specific beekeepers, especially in islands. We are going also to find samples of feral bees in remote areas like mountains and isolated small islands. The samples will be subjected to subspecies diagnosis. We are going to repeat the sampling in the following two years.

AUA will contribute to the development of the questionnaire addressed to beekeepers, in order to investigate, among others, their preferences of native/non-native subspecies of bees. We will also be involved in the analysis and interpretation of the answers to these questions obtained from the survey and in the collection of relevant management data about the currently existing bee conservation areas in Europe (number of beekeepers involved, number of colonies, area size, characteristic of bees, environmental characterization, source of funding, etc.).

AUA is also involving in the suggestion of regional adapted extension strategies in the beekeeping sector with special focus on the application of threshold based IPM strategies and the utilization of locally adapted bees.

The person to contact regarding the SmartBees project in Greece is Prof. Nikolaos Emmanouil and Dr. Maria Bouga.
